What the town and the beach are

Dương Đông (Duong Dong) is the island's main town and administrative centre, built around the mouth of the Duong Dong river. At the river mouth, on a rocky reef, stands Dinh Cau, a shrine to the guardians of fishermen rebuilt in its present form in 1937 and a sunset spot from about 17:00 to 18:00. A few streets inland, the night market on Bach Dang street opens at 17:00.

Long Beach, Bai Truong in Vietnamese, runs for more than 20 km south from Dinh Cau to Khoe Tau Ru. Its northern end is town beach; further south it is lined with large resorts. InterContinental Phu Quoc Long Beach has 459 rooms, suites, residences and villas about 15 minutes from the airport; Regent Phu Quoc, an all-suite and villa resort, holds a MICHELIN Key; La Veranda, on Duong Dong beach, has 74 rooms in a French-colonial style; Salinda, at Cua Lap, has 121 rooms, suites and villas.

For a golfer this is the convenience base, not the golf base. Both courses are a drive north, but dinner, the airport and everything a non-golfing partner might want in the evening are close.

Golf from here

Eschuri Vung Bau is described as about 20 km north of Duong Dong, and the Bai Dai area, where Vinpearl Golf is, about 25 km by the published distance to VinWonders. The bus from Duong Dong to Ganh Dau takes 50 to 70 minutes; a private car is quicker, and we give the pickup time in your plan. For a 06:30 tee time, expect to leave before 05:30 from a hotel on Long Beach.

That is fine for one or two rounds. For three or more, the early starts add up, which is why our golf and beach package plays its first two rounds from the north-west coast and only the last from here. Golfers already staying on Long Beach can book a single round with transfers.

How many nights

As a pure golf base, two nights are enough for one round and a day in town. As the second half of a golf trip, three nights let a non-golfing partner have two full days near the beach and the market while the golfer plays once more. Four nights or more here only makes sense if golf is a small part of the trip.

Getting there and around

From Phu Quoc International Airport to Duong Dong is about 20 to 30 minutes. Airport taxis (Mai Linh, Vinasun, Sai Gon and Phu Quoc firms) cost about VND 180,000 to 220,000 to the town; Grab quotes about VND 120,000 for an airport transfer, and short rides in Duong Dong VND 30,000 to 60,000. Green SM runs electric taxis booked by app.

The free VinBus route 20 links Grand World with Bai Vong port and stops at 10B Hung Vuong in Duong Dong, 05:30 to 16:00, for holders of a VinWonders, Safari or Grand World ticket. Scooters are rented widely, but Vietnam recognises only 1968-convention international permits with a home licence, and a rider without one may find their insurer refuses a claim. With golf bags, a car is the only sensible option.

When to skip this area as a golf base

  • You plan three or more rounds. The drive north before each tee time adds up; base on the north-west coast.
  • You want quiet. Duong Dong is the island's busiest town.
  • You are travelling from May to October for the beach. Long Beach faces the south-west monsoon.
  • You want to walk from your room to the first tee. No course is within walking distance of Long Beach.

Packages that use this base

The golf and beach package spends nights four to six here. The single round with transfers collects golfers from any hotel on Long Beach. For golf-first stays, see Bai Dai and Ganh Dau or Vung Bau and Cua Can.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

How early do we leave Long Beach for a morning round?

For a 06:30 tee time, before 05:30. The courses are 20 to 25 km north of Duong Dong, and we time the pickup so you reach the clubhouse with time to check in.

Is the night market worth a golfer's evening?

It is open 17:00 to 22:00, busiest 19:00 to 21:00, and a short drive from the Long Beach hotels. Go early if you have a tee time the next morning.

Can we see the sunset after golf?

Yes. The sun sets over the sea on this coast, between about 17:40 in November and 18:31 in July. Dinh Cau is the town's sunset spot.

Should we rent scooters to reach the course?

No. Clubs do not travel well on a scooter, and Vietnam only recognises 1968-convention international permits held with a home licence. Use a car.
